Kelley O’Brien, Assistant Professor of New Media and Design, premieres her film “Beneath the Sand the Sea” at the Bahraini national arts and culture festival, Muharraq Nights throughout the month of December 2024.
The film was produced as a result of O’Brien’s three-month residency at The Art Station in Bahrain in Summer 2024. The multi-channel immersive video essay film explores “…three distinct time periods: the water myths of the Dilmun period, the pearling industry specifically in the late 1800s and the current shrinking of natural spring water flow and reliance on desalination of ocean water for drinking water. It features a variety of video typologies from documentary style film techniques to experimental video that combines studio produced imagery with real life video, and animations…” O’Brien collaborated with multiple Bahraini artists, filmmakers, voice actors, and musicians on the project.
